ABSTRACT Purpose To characterize the knowledge, skills, opinions, and main barriers perceived by speech-language pathologists, in child language in Brazil, regarding evidence-based practice (EBP). Methods The study was conducted between August 2021 and July 2022 using an online questionnaire. In addition to sociodemographic and field data, 22 items related to EBP were considered and subdivided into “knowledge”, “skills”, “opinion” and “barriers”. Each item had five response options (strongly disagree, disagree, not decided, agree, strongly agree). A total of 122 speech-language pathologists who work with child language answered the questionnaire. Their responses were described by the percentage of frequency distribution. The time since graduation and the level of proficiency in English were considered to compare the distribution pattern of the answers. Results Although most speech-language pathologists report having learned the basics of EBP in their academic training, there are weaknesses in their knowledge and lack of mastery of search strategies and critical evaluation of scientific articles. Although most agree that EBP’s use is necessary for speech-language practice and consider the need to increase the use of scientific evidence in their daily practice, the lack of articles, difficulties related to the practical application of scientific results and lack of collective support among colleagues are identified as barriers. Conclusion This study alerts the academic community to the urgency of considering EBP in the context of Brazilian Speech-Language Pathology.

RESUMO Objetivo Caracterizar o conhecimento, habilidades, opiniões e principais barreiras percebidas por fonoaudiólogos, da área de linguagem infantil no Brasil, a respeito da prática baseada em evidências (PBE). Método O estudo foi conduzido entre agosto de 2021 e julho de 2022 por meio de um questionário online. Além de dados sociodemográficos e de campo de trabalho, foram considerados 22 itens relacionados à PBE e subdivididos em “conhecimento”, “habilidades”, “opinião” e “barreiras”. Cada item apresentava cinco opções de resposta (discordo totalmente, discordo, não estou decidido, concordo, concordo totalmente). Ao total 122 fonoaudiólogos que atuam na área da linguagem infantil responderam ao questionário. Suas respostas foram descritas pela porcentagem de distribuição de frequência. O tempo de formação e o nível de domínio do inglês foram considerados para comparar o padrão de distribuição das respostas. Resultados Apesar da maioria dos fonoaudiólogos reportar ter aprendido as bases da PBE em sua formação acadêmica, há fragilidades em seu conhecimento e falta de domínio das estratégias de busca e avaliação crítica dos artigos científicos. Ainda que a maioria concorde que a aplicação da PBE é necessária para a prática fonoaudiológica e considere precisar aumentar o uso de evidências científicas em sua prática diária, são apontadas como barreiras a falta de artigos, dificuldades relacionadas à aplicação prática de resultados científicos e falta de apoio coletivo entre os colegas. Conclusão Este estudo alerta a comunidade acadêmica para a urgência de se considerar a PBE no contexto da Fonoaudiologia brasileira.

ABSTRACT Purpose monitor the development of pragmatic skills in children with clinical risk indicators for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) before and after the application of an integrated parental guidance protocol. Methods Seven families who had children with clinical risk indicators for autism spectrum disorder and were in the diagnostic process participated in this study. The study was divided into three moments: (1) structured interview with parents and assessment of children's pragmatic skills, (2) virtual sessions with guidance to parents related to the characteristics of the condition and skills that can be developed to favor their development, and (3) reassessment of children's pragmatic skills. Statistical analysis considered occupation of communicative space, use of functions and communicative means at ground zero and post-monitoring. Results There was no significant difference between the two evaluation moments, but a greater number was observed in the use of communicative acts and more interactive communicative functions as an outcome. Conclusion The monitoring of children’s pragmatic skills suggests that they present discrete evolution, especially the more interactive ones, after the application of the integrated parental guidance protocol.

RESUMO Objetivo monitorar o desenvolvimento de habilidades pragmáticas em crianças com indicadores clínicos de risco para Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo antes e após a aplicação de um protocolo interdisciplinar de orientação parental. Método Participaram deste estudo sete famílias que possuíam filhos com indicadores clínicos de risco para o Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo e estavam em processo diagnóstico. O estudo foi dividido em três momentos: (1) entrevista estruturada com os pais e avaliação das habilidades pragmáticas das crianças, (2) sessões virtuais de orientação aos pais relacionadas às características do Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo e habilidades que podem ser desenvolvidas para favorecer seu desenvolvimento, e (3) reavaliação das habilidades pragmáticas. A análise estatística considerou ocupação do espaço comunicativo, uso de funções e meio comunicativo no marco zero e no pós-monitoramento. Resultados Não houve diferença significativa entre os dois momentos de avaliação, mas foi observado maior número no uso de atos comunicativos e funções comunicativas mais interativas como desfecho. Conclusão Desta forma o monitoramento das habilidades pragmáticas sugere que estas apresentem discreta evolução, principalmente as mais interativas, após a aplicação do protocolo integrado de orientação.

RESUMO Objetivo verificar se o desempenho de pré-escolares nascidos prematuros e a termo no subteste de linguagem da Bayley-III difere e identificar se as variáveis idade gestacional, peso ao nascer, nível socioeconômico e escolaridade materna são determinantes no desfecho de desenvolvimento de linguagem. Método estudo transversal descritivo caso controle em que 36 pré-escolares nascidos prematuros e 27 nascidos a termo foram avaliados em relação ao desenvolvimento de linguagem pelo subteste da Bayley III. Foram considerados pré-escolares entre 18 e 36 meses de idade cronológica; com ausência de síndromes ou alterações genéticas, sensoriais, neurológicas, auditivas ou visuais; e que não tinham realizado terapia fonoaudiológica previamente. Os testes de Mann-Whitney, Exato de Fisher e regressão logística binária foram utilizados para análise estatística. Resultados o desempenho dos grupos não diferiu seja pela pontuação composta (p=0,701) ou pela classificação baseada no percentil (p=0,225). A idade gestacional, o peso ao nascimento e o nível socioeconômico não influenciaram no desfecho do desenvolvimento de linguagem. No entanto, a escolaridade materna foi significativa (p=0,014) no modelo de regressão logística binária, sugerindo que a mãe ter estudado até a educação básica aumenta a chance de ter um filho com desempenho abaixo do esperado no subteste de linguagem da Bayley III em 6,31 vezes. Conclusão não houve diferença entre os grupos no subteste de linguagem da Bayley-III e apenas a escolaridade materna influenciou no desfecho do desenvolvimento de linguagem.

ABSTRACT Purpose to verify if the performance of pre-school children born prematurely and at term in the Bayley-III language subtest differs and to identify whether variables gestational age, birth weight, socioeconomic level, and maternal education are determinant in the outcome of language development. Methods Descriptive cross-sectional case-control study in which 36 pre-school children born prematurely and 27 born at term were evaluated concerning language development by the Bayley III subtest. Preschoolers between 18 and 36 months of chronological age were considered; with no syndromes or genetic, sensory, neurological, auditory, or visual impairments; and had not previously undergone speech therapy. Mann-Whitney, Fisher's Exact, and binary logistic regression tests were used for statistical analysis. Results the groups' performance did not differ either by the composite score (p = .701) or by the classification based on the percentile (p = .225). Gestational age, birth weight, and socioeconomic status did not influence the outcome of language development. However, maternal education was significant (p = .014) in the binary logistic regression model, suggesting that the mother having studied until basic education increases the chance of having a child underperforming in the Bayley III language subtest 6.31 times. Conclusion there was no difference between the groups in the Bayley-III language subtest and only maternal education influenced the outcome of language development.

RESUMO Objetivo identificar o desempenho linguístico (vocabulário expressivo, fonologia e discurso) e cognitivo (memória de curto prazo verbal) de pré-escolares residentes de uma comunidade quilombola. Método Vinte e quatro pré-escolares quilombolas de 4 e 5 anos sem queixas no desenvolvimento da linguagem participaram do estudo. A maioria das famílias era da classe D-E e a escolaridade materna e paterna era inferior ao Ensino Médio. Seus responsáveis responderam a um questionário sobre seu desenvolvimento prévio, práticas familiares e aspectos socioeconômicos, enquanto a avaliação incluiu testes de vocabulário expressivo, fonologia, discurso e memória de curto prazo verbal. Os dados coletados foram submetidos à análise estatística descritiva para caracterizar as práticas familiares, os aspectos socioeconômicos e o desempenho linguístico e cognitivo. A análise inferencial utilizou o teste exato de Fisher para comparar o desempenho entre os sujeitos de 4 e 5 anos, além de comparar o desempenho de acordo com as práticas familiares. Resultados Maior parte dos pré-escolares apresentou desempenho adequado no vocabulário (78,3%) e na fonologia (79,2%); e 63,6% tiveram o discurso classificado como descritivo. 82,6% apresentaram desempenho em tarefa de memória de curto prazo verbal abaixo do esperado para idade. Conclusão Ainda que os pré-escolares deste estudo apresentem comunicação funcional, seu perfil de desenvolvimento da linguagem e de habilidades cognitivas demonstrou ser mais vulnerável, o que poderá repercutir em sua trajetória escolar.

ABSTRACT Purpose to identify linguistic performance (expressive vocabulary, phonology and narrative) and cognitive performance (Verbal Short-Term Memory (VSTM)) of preschoolers living in a quilombola community. Methods Twenty-four quilombola preschoolers aged four (4) and five (5) years with no complaints in language development participated in the study. Most families were in the D-E class and maternal and paternal education was lower than high school. Their guardians answered a questionnaire about their previous development, family practices and socioeconomic aspects, while the assessment included tests of expressive vocabulary, phonology, narrative and verbal short-term memory. The data collected were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis to characterize family practices, socioeconomic aspects and linguistic and cognitive performance, inferential analysis used Fisher's exact test to compare performance between subjects aged 4 and 5 years and also to compare performance according to family practices. Results 78.3% of preschoolers performed adequately in vocabulary and 79.2% in phonology; and 63.6% had the narrative classified as descriptive. 82.6% had a VSTM task performance below the expected for age. Conclusion Although the preschoolers in this study had functional communication, their profile of language development and cognitive skills was more vulnerable and may have an impact on their school trajectory.

Resumo Objetivo Averiguar a ocorrência e o tipo de hipersensibilidade auditiva em crianças com sinais clínicos de Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo por meio do relato dos pais no contexto da pandemia da COVID-19. Método Trata-se de um estudo transversal e descritivo, composto por pais de 11 crianças com sinais clínicos de risco para Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo. As crianças eram de ambos os sexos, com média de 44,8 meses de idade. Os pais responderam, por meio de contato telefônico, a um questionário, previamente validado, sobre comportamentos de hipersensibilidade auditiva de seus filhos. Foi considerado como sinalizador de hipersensibilidade a pontuação igual ou superior a oito pontos no escore geral. Resultados 63,6% das crianças apresentaram resultado indicativo de hipersensibilidade e 54,5% obtiveram pontuação máxima nas questões relacionadas à irritabilidade a sons específicos. Os sons citados como geradores de irritabilidade foram: palmas, fogos, gritos, ferramentas de construção, canto e toque de celular. Conclusão Constatou-se ocorrência de hipersensibilidade auditiva, especialmente relacionada à irritabilidade, o que sugere relação com o sistema límbico e, portanto, pode remeter à misofonia. Assim, torna-se importante a equipe multidisciplinar atentar-se à ocorrência e a características de hipersensibilidade dessa população, a fim de maximizar condições favoráveis à reabilitação.

Abstract Objective To investigate the occurrence and type of auditory hypersensitivity in children with clinical signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder through parents' reports in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Method This is a cross-sectional and descriptive study, composed of parents of 11 children with clinical signs of risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder. The children were of both sexes, with a mean age of 44.8 months. Parents answered a previously validated questionnaire about their children's auditory hypersensitivity behaviors by telephone. A score equal to or greater than eight points in the general score was considered as a sign of hypersensitivity. Results 63.6% of the children presented results indicative of hypersensitivity and 54.5% obtained maximum scores on questions related to irritability to specific sounds. The sounds cited as generating irritability were: clapping, fireworks, shouting, construction tools, singing and cell phone ringtones. Conclusion Auditory hypersensitivity was observed, especially related to irritability, which suggests a relationship with the limbic system and, therefore, may refer to misophonia. Thus, it is important for the multidisciplinary team to pay attention to the occurrence and characteristics of hypersensitivity in this population, in order to maximize favorable conditions for rehabilitation.

RESUMO Objetivo: caracterizar a percepção das mães de crianças com risco para Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo acerca das dificuldades comunicativas dos seus filhos, e investigar possíveis mudanças após intervenção baseada em orientação breve via telemonitoramento. Métodos: participaram oito mães de crianças entre 32 e 45 meses com suspeita de Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo e em processo de investigação diagnóstica. Utilizou-se o Questionário sobre Dificuldades Comunicativas, aplicado antes e após intervenção baseada em orientação por telemonitoramento. A análise inferencial utilizou o teste de postos de Wilcoxon, com nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: a comparação entre os dois momentos não indicou diferença estatística. Porém, houve modificações na análise qualitativa. No domínio 1, observou-se mudança na moda em duas questões. No domínio 2 houve moda discordo inicialmente e, após intervenção, passou a concordo acerca da sensação de outras pessoas evitarem/zombarem seus filhos. No domínio 3, a questão “Pego todos os objetos que meu filho aponta” passou de concordo para discordo (62,5% para 25%) e a “Não consigo ensinar coisas novas para meu filho” não teve mudança na moda, apenas redução da concordância (50% para 25%). No domínio 4, houve redução de concordância, sem mudança da moda. Conclusões: as mães perceberam dificuldades comunicativas e desafios cotidianos para lidar com os filhos. Apesar da ausência de diferença estatística, qualitativamente observaram-se modificações sutis nas percepções das dificuldades após a intervenção.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to characterize the perception of mothers of children at risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder about their children's communicative difficulties, and to investigate possible changes after intervention based on brief guidance by telemonitoring. Methods: eight mothers of children aged 32 to 45 months with suspected Autism Spectrum Disorder undergoing diagnostic investigation participated. The Communicative Difficulties Questionnaire was used, applied before and after intervention based on a brief telemonitoring guidance. The inferential analysis used the Wilcoxon rank test, at a significance level of 5%. Results: comparison between the two moments did not indicate statistically significant difference. However, there were changes in qualitative analysis. In domain 1, a change in mode was observed in two questions. Initially, in domain 2, a disagreeing mode was seen, which after the intervention evolved to agreeing about the feeling of other people avoiding/bullying their children. In domain 3, the question “I take all objects that my child points to” changed from agreeing to disagreeing (62.5% to 25%), and the question “I can't teach my child new things” had no change in mode, only a reduction of agreement (50% to 25%). In domain 4, there was a reduction in agreement, with no change in mode. Conclusions: the mothers perceived communicative difficulties and daily challenges in dealing with their children. Despite the lack of a statistical difference, qualitatively subtle changes were observed in the perceptions of difficulties, after the intervention.

RESUMO Objetivo Caracterizar o desempenho de pré-escolares com desenvolvimento típico de linguagem em tarefas de vocabulário expressivo e de narrativa oral e verificar possíveis correlações. Método Participaram dessa pesquisa 39 crianças com idade entre 4 a 6 anos, de ambos os gêneros, sem queixas sobre o desenvolvimento de linguagem. As mães responderam um questionário de classificação socioeconômica, enquanto para avaliação do vocabulário foi utilizada a prova de Vocabulário Expressivo do ABFW e para eliciar a narrativa oral da criança foi utilizado o livro “Frog, where are you?”. Os dados coletados foram submetidos à análise estatística descritiva e inferencial. Resultados Com relação ao vocabulário expressivo, a maioria dos pré-escolares (92,3%) apresentou designação verbal usual (DVU) total adequada para a faixa etária e os campos semânticos com maior DVU foram “animais”, “formas e cores”, “brinquedos e instrumentos musicais”, “meios de transporte” e os com menor foram “profissões” e “locais”. O tipo de narrativa predominante foi causal, seguido pela intencional. Não houve correlação entre DVU e o uso de palavras nas narrativas, mas houve correlação positiva entre o total de palavras e o número de palavras diferentes utilizadas na narrativa. Conclusão Não houve correlação entre o vocabulário expressivo (DVU) e o uso de palavras na narrativa, mas os pré-escolares que usaram mais palavras em suas narrativas também apresentaram maior variedade lexical nesta amostra.

ABSTRACT Purpose To characterize the performance of preschoolers with typical language development in tasks of expressive vocabulary and oral narrative and to verify possible correlations. Methods The study included 39 children aged 4 to 6 years old, of both genders, with no complaints about language development. Mothers answered a questionnaire of socioeconomic classification, while the ABFW Vocabulary Test was used to evaluate the vocabulary and the book “Frog, where are you?” was used to elicit the child's oral narrative. The data collected were submitted to descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. Results Regarding expressive vocabulary, the majority of preschoolers (92.3%) had the usual verbal designation (UVD) suitable for the age group, and the semantic fields with the highest UVD were “animals”, “shapes and colors”, “toys and musical instruments”, “transportation” and those with children were “professions” and “local”. The predominant type of narrative was causal, followed by intentional. There was no correlation between UVD and the use of words in the narratives, but there was a positive correlation between the total and the number of different words used in the narrative. Conclusion There was no correlation between the expressive vocabulary (UVD) and the use of words in the narrative, but the preschoolers who used more words in their narratives also showed greater lexical variety in this sample.

RESUMO Objetivo Investigar o desempenho lexical e a habilidade de memória de curto prazo verbal em crianças prematuras em idade pré-escolar, e comparar os resultados com seus pares nascidos a termo. Método Participaram do estudo 40 pré-escolares com idade entre 4 e 5 anos e 11 meses divididos em dois grupos, sendo 20 nascidos prematuros e 20 nascidos a termo. Os grupos não diferiram quanto à idade, renda familiar e escolaridade materna. Foram utilizados testes de vocabulário expressivo e memória de curto prazo verbal. A análise estatística inferencial foi realizada por meio dos testes de Mann-Whitney e exato de Fisher. Resultados O desempenho dos grupos não diferiu na tarefa de vocabulário, mas o grupo de prematuros apresentou desempenho inferior ao de seus pares na tarefa de repetição de não palavras. Conclusão Nesta amostra, o desempenho dos pré-escolares que nasceram prematuros foi estatisticamente inferior ao daqueles nascidos a termo apenas na tarefa de repetição de não palavras. Assim, o nascimento prematuro esteve associado a desempenho no vocabulário expressivo compatível com o esperado para a idade, porém com prejuízos na memória de curto prazo verbal.

ABSTRACT Purpose To investigate lexical performance and verbal short-term memory ability in premature infants at preschool age and compare the results with their full-term peers. Methods Forty preschool children aged between 4 and 5 years and 11 months participated on the study and were equally divided into two groups considering their gestational age: preterm and full-term. Groups did not differ on age, family income and maternal education. Participants were paired according to their chronological age and their socioeconomic status. Their performance was assessed using expressive vocabulary and verbal short-term memory tests. Inferential statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney and the Fisher exact test. Results Group performance did not differ on vocabulary, but premature children showed an inferior performance on nonword repetition tasks. Conclusion These data indicates that preschoolers born premature performed statistically lower than their peers born full-term on nonword repetition task. Thus, premature birth was associated to vocabulary development on typically developing range, but also to verbal short-term memory impairments.

RESUMO Objetivo investigar o desempenho de crianças falantes do Português Europeu em prova brasileira de vocabulário expressivo, buscando apontar se existem diferenças entre as faixas etárias e o gênero, além de verificar sua aplicabilidade nesta população. Método a amostra foi constituída de 150 crianças em desenvolvimento típico, de ambos os gêneros, com idade entre 5 e 6 anos. Todas frequentavam escolas de ensino públicas na região norte de Portugal. Para avaliação do desempenho semântico, foi utilizada a prova do vocabulário expressivo do teste de linguagem infantil – ABFW, considerando a porcentagem de designações verbais usuais e a classificação (adequado / inadequado) de acordo com os valores de referência brasileiros. Resultados o desempenho das crianças portuguesas indicou que aos 6 anos elas têm maior porcentagem de acertos no vocabulário expressivo. Quanto ao gênero, houve apenas diferenças pontuais: as meninas demonstraram maior domínio nos campos semânticos vestuário (em ambas as idades) e móveis e utensílios (aos 5 anos), já os meninos demonstraram maior domínio no campo semântico meios de transporte (6 anos). Com relação à classificação, não houve diferença entre as faixas etárias no desempenho geral, apenas o campo semântico formas e cores teve mais indivíduos de 6 anos com desempenho inadequado. Conclusão os valores de referência adotados na população brasileira para classificação do desempenho indicaram que mais de 80% das crianças de cada faixa etária poderiam ser classificadas com desempenho adequado, o que sugere que tal prova possua potencial como instrumento de avaliação quantitativa do vocabulário em Português Europeu nesta faixa etária.

ABSTRACT Objective to investigate the performance of European Portuguese children in a Brazilian test of expressive vocabulary, seeking to identify differences between age groups and gender, and to verify its applicability in this population. Methods the sample consisted of 150 typical developed children, of both genders, between the ages of 5 and 6. All children attended public schools in the north area of Portugal. To assess the semantic performance, the expressive vocabulary sub-test of the language test (ABFW) was used, considering the percentage of usual verbal assignments and the classification (adequate/inadequate) according to the Brazilian reference values. Results the performance of the European Portuguese children indicated that at age 6 they have a higher percentage of correct answers in expressive vocabulary. As for the gender, there were only occasional differences: the girls showed a greater dominance in the semantic fields of clothing (both ages) and furniture and utensils (at age 5), whereas the boys showed more dominance in the semantic field means of transportation (6 years). Regarding classification, there was no difference between age groups in overall performance. Only the semantic field shapes and colors had more individuals of 6 years with inadequate performance. Conclusion the reference values adopted in the Brazilian population for semantic performance indicated that more than 80% of the children of each age group could have their performance classified as adequate. Such evidence suggests that this tool shows potential as an instrument of quantitative vocabulary’s assessment of 5 and 6-years old children in European Portuguese.

RESUMO Objetivo investigar e comparar o desempenho de escolares com distúrbio específico de linguagem (DEL) e em desenvolvimento típico de linguagem em atividades de identificação de aliteração e rima e verificar, em ambas as tarefas, a influência dos distratores semânticos e fonológicos. Método participaram do estudo 12 escolares previamente diagnosticados com DEL (GP) e 48 escolares em desenvolvimento típico (GC) com idade entre 7 anos e 9 anos e 11 meses. Todos cursavam o 2º ou 3º ano do ensino fundamental I e apresentavam audição e inteligência não verbal preservadas. Como medidas experimentais, foram utilizados testes padronizados de identificação de aliteração e rima, com presença de distratores semânticos e/ou fonológicos. Resultados a análise intragrupo demonstrou que ambos os grupos apresentaram desempenho inferior em rima do que em aliteração (GC p<0,001; GP p=0,011). A análise intergrupos indicou que o desempenho do GP foi inferior ao do GC em ambas as tarefas (aliteração p=0,001; rima p=0,009). A análise dos erros indicou que na aliteração, em comparação ao GC, os escolares do GP utilizaram mais distratores semânticos (p=0,004) e outros (p<0,001), enquanto na rima utilizaram mais distratores fonológicos (p=0,048) e outros (p=0,031). Conclusão o GP apresentou dificuldade em tarefas de aliteração e rima, demonstrando estar aquém dos seus pares sem alteração de linguagem. Estes escolares demonstraram analisar os estímulos apresentados nas tarefas de consciência fonológica de forma mais global, o que os fez desprezar aspectos segmentais importantes. Estes dados reforçam a necessidade da inclusão precoce destas habilidades no processo terapêutico da população com DEL.

ABSTRACT Purpose this study investigated and compared the performance of school-aged children with specific language impairment (SLI) and their peers typically developing language in alliteration and rhyme tests. The study also aimed to evaluate the influence of semantic and phonological distractors on both tests. Methods twelve school-aged children with SLI (study group - SG) and 48 peers typically developing language (control group - CG) aged 7 to 9 years. All of them were on 2nd or 3rd grade and presented hearing thresholds within normal limits and appropriate nonverbal intellectual performance. The experimental assessment consisted in alliteration and rhyme tests with semantic and/or phonological distractors. Results intragroup analysis showed that both groups presented lower performance in rhyme than alliteration activities (CG p<.001; SG p=.011). Intergroup analyses revealed that the SG had a poorer performance in both tasks in comparison to the CG (alliteration p=.001; rhyme p=.009). The error analysis pointed out that in alliteration, the SG opted more frequently for semantic (p=.004) and other distractors (p<.001) than the CG, whereas in rhyme tests, they opted more frequently for phonological (p=.048) and other distractors (p=.031). Conclusion the SG presented difficulty in alliteration and rhyme tasks, indicating poorer performance than their peers without language impairment. School-aged children with SLI attested that they analyze phonological awareness stimuli in a more general way, leading them to overlook relevant segmental aspects. These data reinforce the need for early intervention of these abilities in this population.

RESUMO Objetivos Comparar o uso funcional de verbos e substantivos por crianças com alterações específicas de linguagem (AEL) falantes do Português Brasileiro e investigar se o uso destes tipos de palavras difere das crianças em desenvolvimento típico de linguagem (DTL). Além disso, comparar a utilização de cada tipo de verbo entre os grupos. Método Participaram do estudo 80 pré-escolares, 20 com AEL e 60 com DTL. A faixa etária dos sujeitos com AEL variou entre 3 e 6 anos, e do grupo com DTL variou entre 2 e 4 anos. O pareamento dos sujeitos foi baseado na idade linguística expressiva. A amostra de fala foi eliciada por meio de interação lúdica, e dessa amostra foram selecionados os substantivos e verbos produzidos. Resultados Os pré-escolares com AEL utilizaram mais verbos do que substantivos em fala espontânea. O uso de substantivos não diferiu entre os grupos, mas nos verbos o subgrupo de 3 anos com AEL os utilizou com mais frequência que seus pares. Os tipos de verbos mais utilizados por sujeitos com AEL foram de ligação, intransitivo e transitivo direto. A comparação entre os grupos neste aspecto diferiu pontualmente para os verbos transitivo direto, bitransitivo e de ligação; apenas o verbo transitivo circunstancial foi mais utilizado pelos sujeitos em DTL para todas as idades. Conclusão O uso de substantivos e verbos em crianças com AEL respeita o padrão do desenvolvimento típico, mas ocorre de forma mais lenta. O uso de verbos com menos complementos é predominante nesta população.

ABSTRACT Purpose To compare the functional use of verbs and nouns by Brazilian Portuguese-speaking children with language impairment (LI) and to verify whether their use of these word classes is different from that of children with typical language development (TLD). This study also aimed to compare the use of each verb type between groups. Methods Participants were 80 preschool children, 20 of them diagnosed with LI and 60 with TLD. The age ranges of participants were 3 to 6 years for children with LI and 2 to 4 years for children with TLD. Individuals were paired based on their expressive language age. Ludic interaction was used to elicit the speech sample from which nouns and verbs were selected from spontaneous speech. All nouns and verbs were tabulated and verbs were classified. Results Preschoolers with LI use verbs more often than nouns in their production of spontaneous speech. The use of nouns presented no difference between the groups, but verb use frequency was higher in children with LI for the 3-year-old subgroup. The verbs most frequently used by children with LI were copula, intransitive, and transitive direct. Comparison between the groups revealed few differences regarding the use of transitive direct, bitransitive, and copular verbs. Only transitive circumstantial verbs were more often used by children with TLD at all ages. Conclusion The use of nouns and verbs by children with LI complies with the typical development standard, but it occurs more slowly. The use of verbs with fewer complements is predominant in these children.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the behavior and social profile of Brazilian children with specific language impairment (SLI) and explore whether the severity of language deficits was associated with behavioral problems and low social competence. Twenty-four children with SLI aged from 6 to 11 years who showed substantial expressive language problems and were receiving speech-language therapy were assessed through the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Children with SLI showed high rates of behavioral problems and low levels of social competence. With the exception of two subscales (“somatic” and “rule breaker”), the percentage of children with SLI at risk of behavioral problems was significantly higher than the same proportion in the general population; and almost all children with SLI (95.2 %) demonstrated problems with social competence. The severity of language deficits was associated with the risk of behavioral problems according to only one criterion. No associations were found between the severity of language problems and social competence. The study provides cross-cultural evidence to support the existence of behavior problems and reduced social competence in children with SLI. Our findings point to the need of using a combination of measures to classify the severity of language problems rather than a single dimension.

Objetivo Caracterizar a alteração fonológica e o desempenho na memória de curto prazo fonológica de escolares com distúrbio específico de linguagem (DEL), além de investigar se há correlação entre essas variáveis. Métodos O grupo foi composto por 15 escolares com DEL, de ambos os gêneros (14 meninos), com idades variando entre 7 anos e 12 anos e 11 meses. Todos estavam em terapia fonoaudiológica. A alteração fonológica foi caracterizada pela Porcentagem de Consoantes Corretas Revisada (PCC-R) das provas de Fonologia do ABFW. A memória de curto prazo fonológica foi avaliada a partir da porcentagem de acertos na similaridade e na extensão das pseudopalavras do Teste de Repetição de Pseudopalavras. A correlação foi investigada a partir do PCC-R, em cada prova, e da porcentagem total de acertos na repetição das pseudopalavras. Resultados Não houve diferença entre o PCC-R na nomeação de figuras e na imitação de palavras e o desempenho na memória de curto prazo fonológica foi melhor quando a similaridade das pseudopalavras era maior e o número de sílabas menor. Houve correlação positiva entre a fonologia e a memória de curto prazo fonológica. Todavia, enquanto o desempenho na fonologia esteve próximo do máximo de acertos possíveis, na memória de curto prazo o desempenho médio não alcançou a metade dos acertos possíveis. A média de acertos na porcentagem de consoantes corretas foi superior a 85%. Conclusão O desempenho dos escolares com DEL na memória de curto prazo fonológica diferiu quanto à similaridade e à extensão das pseudopalavras. Constatou-se ainda correlação positiva entre estas variáveis.

Purpose To characterize phonological impairment and short-term memory performance of school-aged children with specific language impairment (SLI) and investigate the possible correlations between these variables. Methods The group comprised 15 school-aged children of both genders (14 boys) with SLI, aged between 7 years and 12 years and 11 months. They were all undergoing speech therapy. To verify phonological impairment, the tasks of naming and imitation from the phonology test were used and based the calculus of percentage of correct consonants reviewed (PCC-r). Phonological short-term memory was assessed by the Test of Pseudoword Repetition. Results There was no difference in PCC-R accuracy between picture naming and word imitation tasks. Phonological short-term memory performance was better for pseudowords that showed greater similarity and had fewer syllables. A positive correlation was observed between phonology and phonological short-term memory; however, while phonological performance approached the maximum number of possible correct answers, the average short-term memory performance did not reach half of the possible correct answers. PCC-r mean correct answer was higher than 85%. Conclusion Phonological short-term memory performance of school-aged children with SLI differs according to word similarity and pseudoword extensions, since positive correlations between these variables were observed.

OBJETIVO: Comparar a ocorrência de rupturas de fala durante a produção de narrativas em escolares com distúrbio específico de linguagem (DEL) e seus pares cronológicos. MÉTODOS: Participaram do estudo 60 crianças com idade entre 7 e 10 anos, sendo 40 em desenvolvimento típico de linguagem e 20 com DEL. Para a coleta de dados, foi utilizada uma série de 15 histórias, representadas por figuras, compostas por quatro cenas cada. As histórias foram transcritas e as rupturas de fala presentes nessas narrativas foram classificadas em gagas (repetição de parte da palavra, repetição de uma sílaba da palavra e fonação disrítmica - prolongamentos, bloqueios e palavras rompidas) ou outras (interjeição, revisão/abandono de segmentos e repetição de frases ou multissilábica). O tipo de ruptura foi comparado em cada grupo, e a ocorrência de cada tipo de ruptura foi comparada entre os grupos. RESULTADOS: Enquanto a ocorrência dos tipos de rupturas não diferiu nos escolares em desenvolvimento típico de linguagem, os escolares com DEL tiveram maior ocorrência de outras rupturas. A comparação entre os grupos revelou que os escolares com DEL produzem mais rupturas de ambos os tipos do que seus pares. CONCLUSÃO: A ocorrência de rupturas de fala durante a produção de narrativas foi maior em escolares com DEL do que seus pares cronológicos, sendo que as rupturas classificadas como não gagas (interjeição, revisão/abandono de segmentos e repetição de frases ou multissilábica) foram mais frequentes para essa população.

PURPOSE: To compare the occurrence of speech disfluencies during narrative production in children with specific language impairment (SLI) and their age-matched peers. METHODS: The study included 60 children aged between 7 and 10 years, 40 with typical language development and 20 with SLI. For data collection, a series of 15 stories was used, each one represented by pictures composed of four scenes. Narratives were transcripted and the speech disfluencies presented on them were classified as stuttering-like disfluencies (part-word repetition, single-syllable word repetition, and dysrhythmic phonation - prolongations, blocks and broken words) or other disfluencies (interjection, revision/abandoned utterances, and multisyllable/phrase repetition). The disfluency categories were compared in each group and its occurrence was also compared between groups. RESULTS: The occurrence of stuttering-like and other disfluencies did not differ among children with typical language development, whereas children with SLI produced other disfluencies. Between-group comparison showed that children with SLI produced more disfluencies of both types than their age-matched peers. CONCLUSION: Children with SLI showed more speech disfluencies during narrative production than their age-matched peers, and the most common disfluencies used by them were not typical of people who stutter (interjection, revision/abandoned utterances, and multisyllable/phrase repetition).
